A stock car in the making

Post by Guest on Mon Aug 24, 2009 9:39 pm

We have abandoned all plans for either car to make an apperance this year as we have decided to make a chassis from scratch and to fully bring back to life our other chassis.

We are taking what we think are the best bits of design from the Higman and Randall designs and including some modifications of our own

I will post a few pictures on here as we progress

Ok Lesson one..

Every piece wants to be "tacked only" untill its all together, (and i mean everything), the roll cage, suspension mountings, all the triangulations, etc.. then when you come to finaly weld it, do a bit at one side, then a bit at the other, to stop exessive heat buil up.. and warping..

Cheers Ace, we only fully welded the main box, then an equal amount of cutting and tacking on each side. the trick was getting the main 50x50mm section and the lower 25x25mm section dead square (we checked the triangulation too and its bob on so far)

Glad to see you "un-tacked" the weld that held that Wibbly Wobbly to the lift (as seen in pics 1 and 2). He was clearly "stuck" and not doing a great deal.

How long you lads think it's going to take. I helped Ray witts build the current 322 f1 shale car and that was 7 days a week for 3 months.

Equally looking forward to helping to build it, and refurb the Higman chassis as well. And the good thing is, it will help while away those long boring dark nights over winter.
In the early stages of this build, i have indeed made 3 lots of tea. Early indications are that it will be almost drinkable about october, and Donkey is gonna make a step so i can reach the kettle instead of standing on my tiptoes.

I recon Ace is right, only spent about 7 man hours so far, I recon its about 25-30 hours to get chassis ready before painting.

It's great to see new blood in the stocker class having a go, not only on the track but in the construction of a new chassis specialy built for "Warton"......Cars #658.#234.#22.#80.#35.#8.#252.were all built for warton all the others are f2's added to or altered to race at Warton.....unless anyone knows different.

This is a picture of the restoration project which will become my car its needs a bit of tube work and a hell of a lot of paint stripping but the main chassis is straight as can be

It took along time to get this back through 4 layers of paint but at least its nice and shiny underneath

Been working on the new chassis most of the day, top section and roll cage now on, made some wishbones. ready to weld all brackets on in next couple of days and do a dummy build (hang all suspension and wheels on) will post some more picks midweek.

bennys been in helping (sorry hindering) again today, he's a dab hand with an angle grinder now (you know monkey see monkey do type of thing) next week we'll teach him to peel a banana

Cheers for bringing the cow juice this morning Benny you can't build stockers without a brew

I think beny is looking to have a go in the stockers ...he's showing a lot of intrest in the constuction side of things ,the engine and box and the back axle will fit any of the F2's yer messing with so remember at the end of the seson when that "capri" dies you know where to fit the running gear...a stocker is probably half the weight of a super!.......you know it makes sense and you will have a pass to park with the big boys........
